What is Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing?

The Basics of Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)

HP Multi Fly Combination is a strong 3D printing innovation that produces profoundly exact and solid parts that are equipped for being utilized straightforwardly in end-use, low-volume creation, or for quick prototyping. When compared to other powder bed fusion technologies, the method has remarkable fast layer times due to the use of well-established 2D printing ink-jetting.

How MJF Printing Works

Multi jet fusion technology, like all powder-based 3D printing processes, builds parts layer by layer by using heat and a fusing agent to set each layer before moving on to the next. Each component is imaged layer by layer with a single laser beam in more conventional methods like Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Stereolithography (SLA), and Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS).

With a printhead that deposits the material and then a fusing agent across the entire build plate in one pass, HP's Multi Jet Fusion functions somewhat like a conventional ink-jet printer, making it possible to print multiple parts simultaneously.

Benefits of MJF Printing

One of the benefits of SLS printing is that the standard build parameters are optimised for best density. This results in Multi Jet Fusion parts that are watertight

If you like the benefits of SLS but want to produce higher quantities for small-batch production runs, Multi Jet Fusion is the way to go. The process has the ability to print multiple parts simultaneously across the entire build volume. This means you can print parts at rates of up to 10X faster than that of SLS or other 3D printing processes. In addition, compared to SLS, MJF delivers more balanced mechanical properties across the X, Y, and Z axes

3D printing processes and materials available at RP Group

Selective Laser Sintering [SLS]

High level of accuracy, relatively cheap raw material, and high temperature resistance make it perfect for a wide range of structural engineering applications.

Materials available: Nylon PA12, Nylon PA12 with glass beads

3D printed parts being processed

PolyJet Printing

PolyJet is a 3D printing technology similar to inkjet document printing, but instead of jetting drops of ink onto paper, PolyJet 3D printers jet layers of liquid photopolymer onto a build tray and instantly cure them with UV light

Materials available: Vero, VeroClear, ABS-Like, Rubber-Like

Stereolithography [SLA]

Stereolithography (SLA) creates parts in a layer-by-layer fashion by using photochemical processes whereby light causes chemical monomers to link together to form polymers.

Materials available: ABS natural and ABS clear stimulants.

Binder Jetting

In binder jetting, a binder is selectively deposited onto the powder bed which bonds these areas together. This forms a solid part one layer at a time.

Materials available: Stainless Steel 17-4PH, Stainless Steel 316L, Steel and Sandstone.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion Metal (LPBF-M)

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process uses a laser to scan and selectively melt the metal powder particles, bonding them together and building a part layer-by-layer.

Materials available: Aluminum

Wax Casting

3D printing technologies create a smooth wax pattern, which is used to create casting molds to produce precious metal parts. Materials available: Brass, bronze, copper, gold, platinum, silver
